Agricultural Facts of Jute

Jute, a tropical fiber plant grows mainly in deltaic regions in sandy and clayey loams. It grows well on alluvial soil, in the flood planes, and deltas of rivers. It needs high levels of humidity and temperature during its period of growth. Heavy rainfall is essential for a good crop.

Sowing of Jute

Jute is sown between March and May. There are two methods of sowing: the seed are either broadcast or dropped into shallow furrows in well ploughed fields. Good quality seeds can produce 3.5 to 4 tons of Jute per hectare.

Growing of Jute

Constant weeding is necessary throughout the growing period for a better yield. In fact, even the plants are thinned out when they achieve the height of about 15 cm. Within 5 months, the Jute Plant achieves a height of about 3-4 meters.

Harvesting of Jute

The plants bloom at this stage and crop is ready for harvesting. They must be cut closely to the ground and can even be uprooted completely if the fields are well flooded.

Pre-Retting Process of Jute

The harvested plants must be dried for 2-3 days and their leaves removed. They are then tied into bundles of 20-25 cm diameters and immersed in soft-running water for 2-3 weeks. The stocks are checked on the 10th day. If the fibers slip out easily when the stock is pressed by the finger and thumb, the Pre-Retting Process is considered complete.

Traditional Water Retting of Jute

After the fibers are loosen from the stock by beating with a wooden mallet, they must be washed in clean water, wrung, and spread out in the sun to dry. The dry fibers are tied into bundles, sorted according to quality, and then pressed into bales of 180 kgs to be transported to manufacturers.

Recent Methods of Jute Retting

Recent methods, viz. Dry and Chemical Retting developed in the laboratory have immense possibilities in improvement in overall Retting Technology.

The Golden, Copper, and Silver Fibers

The Golden Fibers

Jute is the the second most important natural fiber after cotton. It is the cheapest and mostly used bast fibre in the world. Jute Fiber has a lustrous and shiny golden color, hence it is called "The Golden Fibre". Because of its high tensile strength and low extensive nature, Jute Fiber has been the best substitute for any other Vegetable Fibres and the best Natural substitute for Polypropylene.

The major varieties of Jute are:

Bangla Tossa Jute (Corchorus olitorius)

Bangla White Jute (Corchorus capsularis)

These two varieties have great commercial value in the world fiber market and are widely cultivated in the Ganges Delta (India and Bangladesh). The White Jute fiber shows whitish golden luster and the and Tossa Jute fiber shows reddish golden luster.

Jute Fibre has previously been used only to produce yarn, ropes, burlaps, carpets, rugs, and sacks. However, in recent years, the use of jute has exceeded from its traditional frame and has been used to produce a wide range of diversified products that are eco-friendly, bio-degradable, and recyclable. It is the most versatile fibre that has been used to produce almost anything now-a-days.

The Traditional Jute Goods are: agricultural packaging materials (potato sacks), ropes, yarn, twine, fabric (burlap), carpet, rugs, sacks, etc. Currently, Jute is being used in the non-woven and chemical treatment technology where natural fibres are used. The common Diversified Jute Products are: Geo-textiles, automotive non-woven interiors, door panels, particle board, fire retardant fibers, etc.

The Copper Fibers

There are some other varieties in the Corchorus genus, that are commonly known as Wild Jute. These Wild Jute are rarely cultivated and most of the time grow as weeds in different parts of the world. We are indicating the fibers from Wild Jute as "The Copper Fibers".

The most significant varieties of Wild Jute are:

▲ Corchorus japonicus ▲

(Flowering Kerria or Japanese Rose)

This variety also has another Scientific name: Kerria japonica (Rosaceae Family)

Other than these varieties, there are also:

Corchorus fuscus : This variety is cultivated in some parts of the world.
Corchorus decemangulatus : This variety is also cultivated.
Corchorus monpoxensis : This variety is grown in Panama as a different variety of tea.

The reason the fiber from these plants are not found in trade, is because of the following facts:

Some of the Wild Jute Fibers are weak and hydro-sensitive. Therefore, the retting process of the bast fibers requires intensive care & cost,
Some Wild Jute has small & thinner bast or skin and thus produce far less amount of bast fibers then the 2 major varieties of Jute (i.e. Tossa & White Jute),
Wild Jute contains more Lignin (woody content) and thus is coarser than the major varieties,
Most of the fibers from Wild Jute are ineligible for spinning in Yarn Machineries,
For more coarseness, some Wild Jute Fibers requires more cost of production,
Some of the Wild Jute Plants are more vulnerable to plant diseases, insects, and pests than the major varieties of Jute,
Some of the Wild Jute Plants have many branches and this makes the procurement of fibers more labor intensive, etc.

The Silver Fibers

Jute differs from Roselle Hemp (Mesta Jute) and Kenaf (Java Jute). However, Jute is sometimes misinterpreted as Roselle Hemp or Kenaf. These also are bast fibres and commonly called the Allied Fibres of Jute. Roselle Hemp and Kenaf are different variety with same procurement and processing technology.

These fibers belong to the Hibiscus genus and also has equal commercial value in the world fiber market as Jute Fibers. These two fiber plants are also widely cultivated in Bangladesh. Having silvery shine, we are indicating these fibers as The Silver Fibers.

The Roselle Hemp and Kenaf plants almost look the same. However, Roselle Hemp Plant has many branches and Kenaf plant has very few. Even though Jute is widely available vegetable fiber, Kenaf and Hemp is more popular in the western world (Europe & America). Therefore, Jute is often called The Bengal Hemp (Chanvre du Bengale in French) and misinterpreted as Kenaf in most western countries.

The Roselle hemp (Chanvre Rosella in French) plant is also popular for a Rose-like citrus fruit. The fruit is used as ingredients for sauce, sour dishes, Vitamin-C concentration, etc. But, to procure fine bast fiber, the plant is harvested before the blooming of flowers.

Urena lobata is also largely found in many parts of Bangladesh. It grows in marshy and soft soils, but is rarely cultivated. Most of the time it grows as weeds. The fiber from this plant has silver as well as golden color.

Out of all these fibers listed in this blog, only Corchorus olitorius, Corchorus capsularis, Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Hibiscus cannabinus is widely found in trade and Bangladesh is the major source for these bast fiber.

It is estimated that the demand for fibres for clothing alone will rise from the current 60 million tons up to 130 million ton per year in the year 2050 (Kozlowski, 1996), not mentioning the fibre consumption for various other purposes. Therefore, fibers like Hemp, Ramie, Flax, and other bast fibers will totally be utilized by the Textile & Clothing Industry. In industries like the bedding, furniture, automobiles, non-woven, composite, and other similar industries: Jute and its allied fibers will play a monopolistic role in near future. The name "Golden Fiber" will once gain be justified.

From Golden Fiber to Diamond Fiber

Background: Recently, a news article has been published with the title - "Jute is The Golden Fiber no more, it is The Diamond Fiber". The article was published at the front page at 10 December 2005 in The Daily Janakantha, a prominent news daily in Bangladesh. The total article was published in Bangla with an interview with Mushtaq Hussain, Managing Director of The Golden Fibre Trade Centre Limited (GFTCL). This blog represents the translated version of this article in The Daily Janakantha submitted by Kawsar Rahman (The headings are fabricated for better reading)

Bangladeshi jute is no longer "The Golden Fiber" in the international market. It is steadily emerging as "The Diamond Fiber". For the non-government initiatives, the demand of jute is experiencing rapid growth in the international market; despite the non-cooperative role by the government. For the dedicated effort of a young jute-lover, the Bangladeshi jute is now being widely used in BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Ford, and all other famous brands in the automobile manufacturing industry. Jute is now being used in construction, textile, insulation, geotextile, health care, footwear, electronics industry, and even in computer outer board manufacturing industry. If we can enter these diversified markets, then the eco-friendly Jute can once again reign the international market.

Research on Diversified Jute products and its commercial implementation

It was revealed from an investigation that, the Diversification of Jute has been researched for decades at home (Bangladesh) and abroad. Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) also was able to invent some new and Diversified Jute Products. But, most of the researches were filed as projects and they were never commercially implemented. But, many countries have been successful in utilizing their Diversified Jute Products research using Jute fiber from Bangladesh. China has been successful in making apparel products from Jute. China now manufactures high quality jeans, fabric for shirts, and body towels made from Jute. Due to quota restriction by the US to import Chinese Apparels made from cotton, China has diverted their attention to jute products.

The Use of Jute in the Automobile Industry

The biggest success came from the research lab of Manchester University in USA. From the success of this research, jute has entered the automobile, construction, paper and pulp, insulation, geotextile, health care, footwear, aeronautics, computer & electronics exteriors, marine & sports products manufacturing industries. Currently, 20 kgs of jute is being used per car in the western countries. The manufacturers of BMW, Mercedes Benz, ODI, Ford in Europe; GM Motors in USA; Toyota and Honda in Japan are enthusiastically using jute in their cars. BMW has made "Green Car", which is made from Jute. The demand for these "Green Cars" are huge. Therefore, the demand of jute is also rising. If jute can sneak into the annual production of 56 Million cars manufactured worldwide, then jute will never see bad days again. The automobile industry will solely consume 150,000 to 200,000 Ton of raw jute per year.

The Use of Jute in Other Industries

Jute is also being used as insulation materials for construction. Insulation Mat made from jute is being widely used between two walls in the western countries. Jute is also being used to manufacture non-woven mats, which is widely being used in roof materials, furniture, and sleeping mattresses. Computer and electronics exteriors or casing are being manufactured by chemically modifying jute.

Words from Mushtaq Hussain

In this regard, Mushtaq Hussain mentioned that, most of us are dealing with Traditional Jute Products. The Diversified Use of Jute is widely heard, but no one actually have been successful in commercially implementing the ideas. Moreover, the Government is also playing an idle role. He has also mentioned that, he has been trying hard to identify how Jute can be used in diversified sectors. He has developed some ideas. He is also studying how the importers are using jute. He has spent a large amount of funds for researching Jute Products and its Market. From findings, he has realized that, the future of Jute Fiber is very bright. Jute will not remain Golden Fiber anymore, it will become Diamond Fiber. Our new generation will witness this fact very soon. Because, China has already been successful in Jute Research. China is successfully manufacturing jeans, apparel fabrics, and towels from Jute. He has managed to bring back some jeans and towels made form jute from China.

Mushtaq Hussain has also mentioned that, the environmental issue is the top issue through out the world. The European Union has decided to ban the products that can not be recycled or extinguished. Therefore, the European Automobile Industry has faced a new challenge. Annually 56 Million cars are being manufactured in the world, among them 16 Million are produced in Europe. For many days, Fiber Glass was widely used in the door pannel of the cars. But, many recycling and extinguishing parties found it very troublesome to recycle and extinguish the Fiber Glass products. Therefore, they have started to make door panels with Flax. But, flax fiber is very expensive and is not widely available.
